Are you getting ready to travel to China? If so, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. There are so many things to think about before your trip, like learning a few phrases of the language, understanding the currency exchange rate, and packing the perfect suitcase. Don’t worry! To make your trip as stress-free as possible, I’ve put together a checklist of all the important things you should do before traveling to China as an 18-year-old student. From applying for a visa to researching the culture, this guide will help you plan your perfect vacation. So, let’s get started!
Research the Country and its Culture: Understand the Cultural Norms to Respect
Before traveling to China, it is essential to research the country’s culture and its norms. There are certain customs you should be aware of, like bowing slightly when meeting someone or exchanging business cards with two hands. Additionally, avoid touching someone on the head or pointing with a single finger. Being aware of the local culture and respecting its customs will make your stay a much more pleasant experience.
Get Necessary Travel Documents: Visas, Passports and Insurance
Before I travel to China, I make sure I have all the necessary documents. First, I apply for a visa. I make sure to check the validity, as it depends on the type I am applying for. Then, I make sure my passport has enough time left before it expires. It must also have at least two blank pages, so there is enough space for the immigration stamp. Lastly, I get travel insurance to cover any unexpected events. It’s a great way to stay safe and have peace of mind while abroad.
Pack Appropriate Clothing: Dress Respectfully and Avoid Standing Out
When traveling to China, it’s important to remember to pack appropriate clothing. As a student, I recommend packing clothes that are conservative and won’t draw too much attention. This includes avoiding see-through clothing, low-cut tops, and revealing skirts. Also, make sure to bring a light cardigan or wrap as some temples require visitors to cover their shoulders. Additionally, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Finally, don’t forget to pack a hat and sunglasses since the sun can be quite strong during the summer months.
Prepare Your Finances: Exchange Money and Pay with Cash
Before traveling to China, it’s essential to prepare your finances. The Chinese currency is the Renminbi (RMB), so make sure to exchange any foreign currency you have into RMB. You can find exchange centers in most airports and major cities, and they may even offer better rates than you’d find at home. Another thing to remember is that cash is the most popular form of payment in China, so make sure to have enough to get you through your trip. Credit cards are accepted in some places, but it’s best to be prepared for the possibility of not being able to use them.
Learn Some Basic Chinese: Communication Is Key to a Successful Trip
If you’re planning a trip to China, learning some basic Chinese is essential. It’s important to remember that communication is key to a successful trip. I’m 18 and recently took a trip to China and I can say firsthand that basic Chinese phrases such as “hello”, “thank you”, and “excuse me” can go a long way. Even if you don’t plan on using Chinese a lot, it’s still beneficial to have a few phrases in your back pocket. Additionally, Chinese people appreciate the effort put in by foreigners and are usually more than willing to help you out. If you really want to impress, try to learn some local slang. Even if you don’t always get the right pronunciation, locals will be impressed that you tried.
